The card companies need to do more to prevent online fraud, but there is simply no incentive for them to do so whilst merchants always carry the cost of fraud.

I applied for a credit card the other day with first direct, after filling out the form i was then asked to enter my acc.no. and sort code!! I was not even told that this was a secure area, i exited the site as this could have been any scam set up on Adwords in a few hours....Beware!

Having been ripped off by some scumbag, the police were not at all interested, They were totally unaware of the problem I encountered. The word internet meant very little to them, I could have been speaking Swahili

The card issuers are not pulling their weight. Why should they though? Customers lose money if their details are used and they don't spot it. Merchants lose money when then funds are returned and chargeback penalties are made. Card issuers simply don't lose out - they may even be making money on chargeback penalties.

The problem will never be significantly reduced until it costs the issuers more. I think it is about time that issuers had to cover a percentage of the transaction when the merchant looses out.

There should be a national police department dedicated to dealing with this so called "minor" online fraud. Local police just don't understand the problem and are not willing to make an arrest even when all the evidence is handed to them. With so little chance of an arrest, what deterrent is there for the budding fraudster?

Merchants can do a lot more too! I am not talking about the little companies, but the large high street brand sites who even set aside huge amounts of money to offset credit card fraud. If they checked card details more readily, and even prevented many of the fraudulent sales going through their systems, then I am sure the fraudsters would be less willing to give it a try.
I have lost count of the number of times that when I have asked for confirmation of details from a card holder when the AVS is marked as 'caution', that I get the same old reply, "I have never before been asked for my details"!
